Customer review

As an introduction, I bought these when my Sennheiser HD202 broke after about a year of usage. After searching through numerous headphone options, I ultimately chose the Koss UR40 based primarily on price, brand name, and because I thought the headphone design looked really good. When it arrived, I eagerly tried it out, and I immediately fell in love. This is probably among the best headphones I’ve ever used.

First, I’ll get sound quality out of the way. I’m no ‘audiophile’ — generally, just about any modern day headphones sounds good to me. Personally, the design of the headphones (circumaural, supraural, earbuds, etc) seems to make more a difference in sound quality to me than anything else. But to get to the short of it, the Koss UR40 do sound pretty damn good. It gives as good of a bass response as my dead Senn HD202 did and the treble response is great. Admittedly, it does seem to lean more towards bass than treble (which is a bit unfortunate as I do find treble more important), but overall, the quality is more than good, and all my music sound as good as it ever did.

Okay, so if I find the sound quality as good as other headphones I’ve used in the past, why am I so in love with it? Well, it seems the design is good in more than just looks. Other reviewers mentioned it already and I can’t stress this enough — the Koss UR40 is SUPER COMFORTABLE.

Two factors allows for this. First, the headphones fits very lightly over my head — almost the same way glasses fit onto your face. It simply rests on your ears instead of constricting like many headphones do. Second, the UR40 is extremely light weight; the weight is listed as 6oz, but it actually feels a lot lighter than most other headphones I’ve used which weights the same or even less. These two factors combined to make the UR40 fit in a way that is unobstrusive; I’m wearing it as I’m typing this review right now and I could think that, over time, I could forget I’m even wearing it. I’ve used quite a few headphones in the past and the only other headphones I can remember coming close to this level of comfort is the Sennheiser HD555.

To get to the point, I really do like the Koss UR40 primarily because of how comfortable it is combined with a very good sound quality. Some other reviewers seem to disagree, but I also really like the design as it looks sleek and the headband actually looks really neat. Plus the fact it’s foldable makes for much better portability. Overall, there is only one complaint I can think of with this and it is the cord length. It’s a teensy bit too short. The cord length is roughly 1.2m (or 4ft). I listen to music primarily on my computer, but I still move around a lot. I have a headphone cord extender already, but personally, I think the UR40’s cord length could use another meter. One other thing — this is not a problem for me personally, but it’s one some others will definitely not appreciate: the UR40 has sound leakage. Someone next to you will definitely hear the music (and hear it with great clarity!), but it’s not so bad that it’ll wake a sleeping person.

Customer questions & answers

Q: Are these technically openback?

A: It is an open back, but I’d say it’s more of a semi-open back in that there is some attenuation of external (room) noises when compared to some of my other open-back headphones.

Q: does this have volume control

A: No, this does not have volume control. You manage that on your device.

Q: is frecuency response 10-20,000 or 15-22,000?

A: 15-22,000

Q: Are these headphones mono or stereo?

A: Stereo.
